Gazal for the day


I wonder if Gazal is a marijuana of poetry. Logically speaking this form of poetry should have been the least popular given that each couplet is unrelated to other. They are related only syntactically and not semantically. But I have liked Gazals over any other form of poetry.

This is one of the first Jagjit Singh Gazal I has heard. It had come on MTv. Both his and Lata’s voice is superb when heard on a high definition sound system.

Words

गम का खज़ाना तेरा भी है, मेरा भी
ये नज़राना तेरा भी है, मेरा भी

अपने गम को गीत बनाकर गा लेना
राग पुराना तेरा भी है, मेरा भी

शहर में गलीयों गलीयों जिसका चर्चा है
वो अफ़साना तेरा भी है, मेरा भी

तू मुझको और मैं तुझको समझाये क्या
दिल दिवाना तेरा भी है, मेरा भी

मैखाने की बात न कर मुझसे वाईज़
आना जाना तेरा भी है, मेरा भी

शाहिद कबीर.

Just look at the first two lines. It takes some time for it’s meaning to sink in.
