The Porn Experiment

Porn and Sex are fascinating subjects for almost everyone but I take unusual interest in them. Sex is the most important tool in nature and without it there wont be any life on earth. Those who want to dive deep into the subject should read this fascinating book called “The Red Queen”. It goes deep into the subject of reproduction and tells us how some seemingly unrelated human behaviors are related to our deeper need to reproduce.

Porn is not a new phenomenon. Even the oldest civilizations such as Egyptians, Romans, Indian, etc.  had pornography as important aspect of their culture.  Internet porn however has changed everything. Today a man with internet connection see wider variety of porn in 10 minutes than all his ancestors experiences put together. Has that really affected our brains ? The answer is apparently Yes. and it has affected us in a same way as it would affect a drug addicts.

The real problem is “constant search for novelty”. Porn, video games, internet addiction etc. is based on the fact that we are constantly searching for “novelty”. The novelty factor increases dopamine secretion in the brain. Over time the brain adjusts to how much novelty is really “novelty”. Watch the talk for more details.

Note: TED is not a scientific conference. So whatever TED speakers speak is not necessarily attested by science. All TED talks must be approached with a bit of skepticism.
